Double Scoop in Suffolk Care Awards

Author:
Leading Lives has scooped two awards and four highly recommended certificates at the Suffolk Care Awards 2017.

We received the awards for Promoting Dignity & Respect in Every Day Life and Food & Catering, as well as four highly recommended awards for Culture, Creativity & Activities, Excellent Training, Student Placement/Apprenticeship and Care Service of the Year.

We received the Promoting Dignity & Respect in Every Day Life for our work with a customer who's story is highlighted below.
He had lived at a residential home in Stowmarket for over 20 years, and whilst great achievements had been made in the past few years to develop his abilities and independence, he still displayed behaviours of concern on occasion and appeared to prefer the company of one member of staff with him rather than a busy home with other customers and multiple staff. An advocate came on board with staff from ACS and as a group we supported him to start finding his own property. Over a 12 month course, staff work together to find him a suitable home, where he could choose all aspects of his environment. This was not possible in shared accommodation. They finally found a bungalow in the Combs area within Stowmarket, which meant he could keep his regular visits with his mother who also lives in Stowmarket, and retain his local links such as his paper round.

Quotes from the gentleman himself and staff within his team:
When staff asked him how he felt about his new house he said "Yeah, I'm happy"
Staff member "His changes are noticeable to everyone who had historically worked with him; how much chattier he is now and how he is a pleasure to work with. He's helpful and engaged with staff and can often be seen smiling"

Our award for Food & Catering was for our development of the Compass Catering & Café project.
This is a new Leading Lives service providing supported work experience to people with Learning Disabilities and Autism. Within the project they can learn about catering so that they can find valued roles in their local community. Once training is complete we aim to help our trainees find further work experience, employment or volunteering opportunities in the Lowestoft area.

Some quotes from feedback from customers were:
"Impressed with diversity of staff"
"Very lovely meal, staff lovely, love everything about the Café"
"A wonderful service which should be encouraged and promoted at every opportunity"

Tony Carr, Leading Lives, Managing Director said: “I am extremely proud of all our award winners which recognise the hard work, creativity and professionalism of our staff.”
